About Me
I was born, raised and still live in Mission, Texas (home of Tom Landry). I have enjoyed photography since my parents gave me a Yashica TL Electro 35mm camera in High School. It didn't take me long to discover that what I enjoyed capturing on film the most was nature and wildlife.
I dabbled at this type of photography for many years but I didn't really get serious about it until 1994 when the Valley Land Fund put on it's very first wildlife photo contest here in south Texas. This is the richest wildlife photo contest in the world with over $120,000.00 in prize money divided up between the photographers and the land owners every contest.
I have entered seven of the eight VLF photo contests held to date with varying degrees of success. While I found my photography to be improving from one contest to another, the competition seemed to be doing a good job of keeping a step or two ahead of me and my winnings were few and far between.
I never gave up though and my persistance paid off in 2004 when my photograph of a Buff Belly Hummingbird frozen in mid-flight (photo here) beat out the 700 or so entries to win Best of Contest and the People's Choice award in the VLF Small Tract Competition. In the most recent contest, I had eight winning photographs, including First and Second place in the Birds division, and was the overall 2nd Grand Prize winner in the Small Tract Competition.
I have had photos published in several books, in magazines, in a calendar, used in advertising and made up into postcards. In addition, I recently had a photograph of a Texas State football player scoring a touchdown appear in the Austin American Statesman newspaper. The same photograph was featured in Texas State University's official website. (To view those photos, click here and here.)
While most of my photography is freelance, I am a regular contributor to Bobcat Fans Magazine. This is a sports related publication which covers the sports programs of the Texas State University Bobcats.
Finally, I am currently looking for opportunities to photograph local sporting events.
Therefore if you have a son or daughter that is participating in a sporting event in the Mission/McAllen area and you would like to hire me to photograph him or her, please
contact me, by clicking on the button below and submitting the contact form, so that we can discuss this possibility. Thank you!
